TMT Steel

TMT (thermo-mechanically treated) bars are the reinforcement backbone of every RCC structure. Rapid quenching gives the bar a hard martensitic rim and a soft ductile core, so it combines high yield strength with the bendability a bar bender actually needs on site.

Grades are defined by yield strength in MPa. Fe 500 is the workhorse; the D suffix denotes higher elongation and better ductility, which is why seismic-zone design usually calls for Fe 500D or Fe 550D.

Fe 500

500 MPa yield. Standard residential and commercial RCC.

Fe 500D

Same strength, higher elongation. Preferred in seismic zones III–V.

Fe 550 / 550D

Higher strength for heavily loaded members; allows some steel saving.

CRS / epoxy coated

Corrosion-resistant variants for coastal and aggressive environments.

• Diameters commonly stocked are 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, 25 and 32 mm; check the rib pattern and manufacturer marking rolled into the bar.
• Compare per-kg landed rate, not per-piece. Bar weight tolerance under IS 1786 means a light bar is a hidden price increase.
• Ask for the mill test certificate for yield strength, elongation and chemical composition on structural work.
• Primary mills cost more than secondary mills but carry tighter tolerance and consistent ductility. On structural members that gap is worth paying.
