Cement

OPC, PPC and PSC cement in 50 kg bags from national and regional brands.

Product overview

Cement is the binder that makes concrete and mortar work. In India the practical choice is between Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC 43 and 53 grade), Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC) blended with fly ash, and Portland Slag Cement (PSC) blended with ground slag.

OPC 53 gains strength fastest and suits structural members on a tight cycle. PPC and PSC gain strength more slowly but end up denser and more durable, which matters for foundations, plaster and coastal or aggressive environments.

Typical units: bag (50 kg), tonne. Track live per-bag rates by metro on the Nautook cement price index.

Common applications

  • Structural concrete for columns, beams and slabs
  • Masonry mortar and plaster
  • Flooring, screeds and tile adhesive beds
  • Precast elements, blocks and pavers
  • Grouting and repair mortars

Available grades and variants

OPC 43
General purpose, plaster and non-critical concrete.
OPC 53
High early strength for structural RCC and precast.
PPC (fly ash blended)
Better workability and long-term durability; the common default for residential work.
PSC (slag blended)
Excellent sulphate and chloride resistance; preferred near coastal and industrial areas.

Buying guide: cement

  • Check the manufacturing date printed on the bag. Cement older than about three months loses strength; older than six months, walk away.
  • Store bags off the floor on planks, away from walls, in a dry covered space. A single wet monsoon night can write off a stack.
  • Squeeze a handful — good cement feels smooth and cool and forms no hard lumps.
  • Compare the landed per-bag rate, not the ex-mill price. Freight and loading are the difference.

Cement FAQs

Which cement is best for house construction?

PPC for most residential work — good workability, less heat of hydration, better long-term durability. Use OPC 53 where you need fast strength gain on structural members.

How many bags of cement per cubic metre of M20 concrete?

About 8 bags (roughly 400 kg) per cubic metre on a nominal 1:1.5:3 mix.

How long can cement be stored?

Up to three months in dry covered storage without meaningful strength loss. Beyond six months it should be retested or rejected.
