Aggregate

Coarse aggregate makes up the bulk of concrete by volume, so its shape, strength and cleanliness govern the concrete's strength and cost. Angular crushed stone bonds better with cement paste than rounded river gravel.

The nominal size you order depends on member thickness and reinforcement spacing: 20 mm for general RCC, 10 mm for thin slabs and congested reinforcement, 40 mm for mass concrete and soling.

Typical units: tonne, brass, cft. Rate varies sharply with quarry distance and lead; consolidate loads where possible.

• Look for angular, clean, well-graded stone — flaky and elongated pieces reduce strength and increase cement demand.
• Reject visibly dusty or muddy loads; coating on the aggregate weakens the paste bond.
• Match nominal size to the smallest of one-fourth the member thickness or the clear reinforcement spacing.
