Murrum

Murrum is a naturally occurring weathered laterite gravel-and-clay mix. It compacts to a firm, well-drained surface at a fraction of the cost of engineered fill, which is why it is the default earthwork material across central and western India.

Quality varies enormously by pit. Good murrum has a decent gravel fraction and low plasticity; poor murrum is essentially clay and will heave and rut once it rains.

Typical units: tonne, brass, tractor trolley. Almost pure freight cost; rates jump the moment the nearest pit is exhausted.

Gravelly murrum

Higher gravel content, better compaction and drainage.

Soft / clayey murrum

Cheaper, suitable only for bulk filling well below the finished level.

• Ask which pit the load is from and inspect a sample for clay lumps.
• Specify compaction in layers of 200–225 mm with watering — dumped murrum settles for years.
• For anything carrying load, insist on a Proctor density and CBR test rather than eyeballing the material.
