Fly Ash Bricks

Dimensionally accurate, low-absorption bricks made from fly ash, lime and gypsum.

Product overview

Fly ash bricks are pressed from fly ash, sand, lime and gypsum and cured rather than fired. Because they come out of a mould, they are far more uniform than kiln bricks — which shows up directly in mortar and plaster consumption.

They are also an environmental win: they divert thermal-plant waste and avoid the topsoil loss and coal burning of a traditional kiln, which is why several states now mandate their use within a radius of power plants.

Typical units: piece, 1000 nos. Usually priced close to clay bricks per piece, but cheaper once plaster savings are counted.

Buying guide: fly ash bricks

  • Ask for the compressive strength test report — this is the single number that separates a good fly ash brick from a chalky one.
  • Check the edges and faces. Consistent size is the whole point; if the batch varies, the plaster saving disappears.
  • Fly ash bricks need less soaking than clay bricks — sprinkle rather than immerse, or the mortar bond suffers.
  • Compare landed cost per square metre of finished wall including mortar and plaster, not per brick.
