Product overview

Concrete blocks — solid, hollow and autoclaved aerated (AAC) — give you a much larger unit than a brick, so a mason lays a wall faster with fewer joints and less mortar.

AAC blocks in particular are a third the weight of masonry for the same wall, which cuts the dead load on the frame and improves thermal insulation noticeably in hot climates.

Typical units: piece, cum. Higher per-piece cost than bricks but usually lower installed cost per square metre.

Buying guide: concrete blocks

  • Compare on cost per square metre of finished wall — a block that costs five times a brick may still be cheaper installed.
  • AAC needs thin-bed adhesive rather than thick cement mortar; budget for it or you lose the advantage.
  • Check block moisture content on delivery — freshly cured blocks shrink and crack the plaster.
  • Confirm compressive strength grade against the structural drawing before ordering for load-bearing walls.

Yes — the aerated structure gives significantly better thermal insulation than clay brick, which reduces cooling load on upper floors and west walls.

Can AAC blocks be used in load-bearing walls?

Only where the block's compressive strength grade satisfies the structural design. In most projects AAC is used as infill in a framed structure.
