An electrical package is wire, conduit, switchgear and accessories. Conductor size is chosen from the connected load and run length, and the protection device is chosen to match the cable — not the other way round.

Insulation grade matters more than most buyers realise. FR, FRLS and ZHFR compounds behave very differently in a fire, and the price difference over a whole house is small relative to the risk.

Typical units: coil (90 m), metre, piece. Wire is priced per coil and tracks the copper commodity price closely.

FR / FRLS / ZHFR

Fire retardant insulation grades in increasing order of safety.

• Check ISI marking and the actual copper conductor area — undersized conductors sold at nominal size are common.
• Use FRLS or better for concealed house wiring; the incremental cost is minor.
• Size the MCB to protect the cable, and use RCCB/RCBO protection on socket circuits.
• Buy conduit heavy enough to survive being cast into the slab without crushing.
