How to check a building material supplier before you pay

The material market runs on relationships, which works well until it does not. These checks take an hour and prevent the most common problems.

Registration and identity

Verify the GSTIN and confirm the trading name matches. Check that the business address is real and that the yard or godown actually holds stock. A supplier who cannot show you where the material sits is a broker, not a supplier — which is fine, as long as you know.

References from similar projects

Ask for two contractors who have taken repeat delivery in the last six months, and call them. Repeat business is the strongest signal there is.

Delivery capability

Own vehicles or a reliable transport arrangement? What is the realistic lead time for your quantity? Can they deliver to your site's access constraints? A great rate from a supplier who cannot reach your gate is not a great rate.

Payment terms and disputes

Agree in writing what happens on short delivery, quality rejection and delayed dispatch, before the first order. Avoid large advances to a supplier you have not worked with.

Or use a verified marketplace

Nautook verifies suppliers before they can list, keeps ratings visible, and holds the order, invoice and delivery record in one place — which removes most of this legwork from every order after the first.

The takeaway

Verify the GSTIN, call two references, confirm delivery capability, and put dispute terms in writing before you pay anything.
