How to estimate construction material for a house without guessing
Under-ordering stops work; over-ordering ties up cash and leaves material degrading on site. Here is how to get close enough to plan, and how to get exact when it matters.

Thumb rules for a first pass
For typical residential RCC construction, per square foot of built-up area: around 0.4 bags of cement, 1.2–1.5 cubic feet of sand, 2.5–3 cubic feet of aggregate, 3.5–4.5 kg of steel and 8–10 bricks.
These numbers assume standard spans and a normal number of floors. They are for budgeting and material scheduling — never for placing the actual steel order.
Concrete by mix ratio
For one cubic metre of M20 nominal mix (1:1.5:3), expect roughly 8 bags of cement, 0.42–0.45 cubic metres of sand and 0.85–0.90 cubic metres of coarse aggregate, before wastage.
Add 3–5% for wastage on aggregates and slightly more for sand if it will sit exposed on site.
Steel needs the bar bending schedule
Steel is the one item where thumb rules cost real money in both directions. Get the bar bending schedule from the structural drawings, total the length by diameter, apply the standard unit weight (d²/162 kg per metre), and add 3% for laps and wastage.
Brickwork and plaster
Roughly 500 traditional bricks per cubic metre of brickwork including mortar, or 55–60 bricks per square metre of a 230 mm wall. Add 3–5% for breakage.
For plaster, calculate the area and multiply by thickness: 12 mm internal, 15–20 mm external. A 1:6 cement–sand plaster consumes about 0.09 bags of cement per square metre at 12 mm.
Schedule your deliveries
Cement should not sit more than a few weeks on site. Sand and aggregate stockpiles get contaminated and lose material. Order in phases tied to the construction schedule instead of one large delivery.
