Concrete grades explained: M10 to M40 and what your house needs
The M in M20 stands for mix; the number is the characteristic compressive strength in N/mm² at 28 days. Everything else follows from that.

The common grades
M10 and M15 are lean mixes for PCC, levelling and blinding under foundations. M20 and M25 cover the structural work in most residential buildings. M30 and M35 appear in commercial structures and heavier loading. M40 and above belong to high-rise columns and precast.
Nominal versus design mix
Nominal mixes — 1:3:6, 1:2:4, 1:1.5:3 — are volumetric recipes that work reasonably up to about M20. Above that, IS 456 requires a design mix, where proportions are calculated and trialled for the actual materials being used.
A design mix accounts for aggregate shape, moisture, admixtures and cement type. It is why a batching plant can hit M30 consistently and site mixing generally cannot.
Water-cement ratio decides strength
More water means more workability and less strength — the relationship is direct and unforgiving. A plasticiser gives you the workability without the water, which is why it is close to essential on pumped or hot-weather pours.
The most damaging thing that happens on Indian sites is water added to the mixer at the site gate to make placing easier. It can cost a quarter of the design strength.
Curing is not optional
Concrete gains most of its strength in the first seven to fourteen days, and only if it stays moist. Seven days of proper curing is the minimum; fourteen is better. Poor curing wastes everything you paid for in cement and grade.
